Tooth Extraction

When teeth become compromised in the jaw they may need to be removed. The removal of teeth is called extraction. There are several reasons that may cause a tooth to become hopeless.

Some of these reasons are as follows:

  • Severe decay in the tooth that is not restorable with dental fillings or dental crowns
  • Severe Infection around the tooth
  • Periodontal disease with severe bone loss causing mobility of tooth
  • Deep fractures in the tooth
  • For orthodontic reasons

Most tooth extractions are done by our Las Vegas Dentist. In some cases such as wisdom teeth that are embedded deep inside the jaw, Dr. J may elect to refer you to an oral surgeon. In this case you may request to be sedated to help you relax and have minimal discomfort.

After a tooth is removed, our dentist may recommend a bone graft (bone augmentation) to replace the missing tooth space in the jaw in order to preserve that space for any future treatments such as a dental implant. There are different types of bone graft material that can be used and you will be informed of the type of bone graft you will be getting before the procedure.

Dr. Jafarifar is here to help you with any tooth issues including tooth extractions. She takes her time getting you completely anesthetized so that you won’t feel any discomfort. If you are nervous about getting this treatment she will prescribe a medication that will make you relaxed in the dental chair.

After you are completely comfortable and numb, Dr. J will use special instruments to loosen and remove the tooth. During the procedure you may feel some pressure which is completely normal.

Dr. Jafarifar will explain every step and what to expect so that you will be most comfortable. If a bone graft is needed she will simply place the bone inside the tooth socket after the tooth extraction and place one or two sutures. You will be given post operation instructions and any necessary prescriptions at that time.

It is normal to have some bleeding and pain after a tooth extraction but if you experience severe bleeding and pain please contact our office as soon as possible. It is important to stop any smoking for 2-3 days after a tooth extraction to prevent a dry socket.

A dry socket is extremely painful and needs to be treated by our dentist.

Other instructions include: No aspirin products for 2 days after the procedure, no spitting, no use of straws, avoid touching the area with your tongue, soft foods for a few days. For a tooth socket to completely heal it takes about 2 months.

After a tooth extraction, it is wise to consult with our dentist about replacing the missing tooth. If nothing is done the adjacent and opposing teeth will gradually drift into the empty space and cause serious bite problems. To restore the missing tooth area there are several options such as an dental implant, dental bridge or partial denture. Dr. J will discuss all options and come up with the best treatment plan for you.

Please let us know if you would like to visit Dr. Jafarifar for a consultation or second opinion on tooth extractions in our Las Vegas office. We will be more than happy to sit with you and discuss all your options in restoring your smile.
