Dentures can help you retain a lovely smile throughout your lifetime. They can help you eat, talk, and live a fuller, more confident life. Transitioning to dentures can feel like a big step for many adults, so we’ve prepared a short article to help you feel more comfortable by understanding what to expect.
Common Reasons for Dentures
You may not realize it, but people of all ages have dentures. Their teeth look so natural you won’t even know they’re not real. Some of the more common reasons for full or partial dentures include:
- Accidents that knock out teeth or cause them to fracture and die.
- Periodontal disease affecting the bone, teeth, and gums.
- Severe tooth decay so that the tooth cannot be capped or restored.
After all of your teeth are extracted, we allow the gums and mouth time to heal before being fitted for dentures.
The First Appointment – Fitting Your Dentures
Typically four or five appointments are needed to complete the transition to dentures. The entire process is very fast and simple. Your new dentures will be custom crafted and hand-fitted just for you. Preferred Family Dentistry works with an expert Las Vegas laboratory to design and craft your new smile.
The first step toward getting dentures is to fill out a patient medical history form. We’d like to hear more about any medications you are taking, any medical issues you’re having, your general oral health, and family history.
Next, we will take impressions of your mouth in order to create perfectly fitting and comfortable new dentures. This involves fitting a tray into the upper and lower part of your mouth to take a negative impression of the bone structure and soft tissues. There is a soft alginate impression material in the trays that holds the shape of your mouth perfectly so we can send the dried tray with the perfect imprint to the lab that will make your dentures. This process is quick and painless.
We also will check the bite by taking molds so we can be sure the teeth fit properly together. Then we’ll discuss the color and shape of your new teeth. We’ll also talk about caring for your new dentures.
We will also talk about your transition to dentures, what to expect, how to get used to them, what you can eat – or any other questions you may have. There are so many benefits to having dentures, but we know it’s a big step. That’s why we’re here to answer any questions you may have.
Adjusting to New Dentures
Once you’re fitted with your new dentures, we will check in with you to make sure the fit is comfortable. There is always an adjustment process when your mouth, tongue and jaw adjust to the fit of the denture. You’ll practice eating and speaking and we will make absolutely sure the bite is perfect and the teeth look natural.
