Why you should avoid Halloween candies

halloween-candyWhat we eat and drink affects our oral health. Eating sticky foods should be avoided as much as possible. Soft sweets, chocolate and candies, pop corns and other foods and snacks that are likely to stick on our teeth cause decay in the teeth. Sticky foods feed the disease causing bacteria, plaque.

Therefore Halloween candies are a threat to our oral health. They are sugary and the most common source of plaque. Plaque is the resultant by product of bacteria formed on the teeth. Sugar feeds the bacteria which causes tooth decay.

Consumption of sweet beverages such as iced tea, sodas and juices also contribute to the accumulation of plaque and decay forming bacteria.

The most recommended dental tip is brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, specifically after meals. This will reduce the amount of bacteria. The bacteria result in forming plaque which then leads to cavities and gum disease.

You can also rinse your mouth with mouth wash or water if you are not able to brush your teeth after a meal. It is advisable to consult our Las Vegas dentist on the type of mouth wash to use. Most dentists recommend those with fluoride for stronger teeth and mouth washes with no alcohol are recommended to prevent dry mouth and consequent decay.

Replacing your tooth brush every three to four months is also recommended. This depends on how worn out the bristles are. Replace yours if it is worn out earlier than expected.

Other Dental tips include taking foods rich in calcium and those that are crunchy. Calcium is recommended for good oral health. Products containing calcium include low fat milk, cheese and yoghurt. Crunchy foods such as carrots, raw vegetables and apples among others have been found to naturally clean teeth.

They can be taken as an alternative for Halloween candies for a healthy oral life. Inform your children about the harmful effects of candy and try to substitute the candy with fun colorful fruits.

Consumption of Halloween candies does not add any value to the body. They not only lack the nutrients necessary for the well being of the body but also have high levels of sugar that are harmful to the teeth.
